LHS GIRLS AND BOYS CREW – FALL 2006
Head Coach: Jennifer Campbell
Athletes: 83
Highlights
This past fall was the most successful season for LHS crew in the history of the team. Beginning with the Textile River Regatta, LHS entered 9 boats, with a total of 81 varsity and novice athletes competing. The Boys Varsity Lightweight Eight took home a gold medal. In addition, the Boys 1st Heavyweight Varsity eight placed 5th out of 31 crews from across New England, and the Girls 1st Varsity eight placed 7th out of 31 boats.
The second race of the season, the varsity team traveled to Connecticut to race in the Head of the Housatonic where the girls 1st Varsity eight placed 5th out of 39 boats. The boys 1st and 2nd varsity eights placed 15th and 19th out of 47 crews from the northeast.
The following weekend the team traveled to New Hampshire to race in the New Hampshire Championships. The Girls 1st Varsity eight placed 1st, taking home the gold medal. The boys varsity team showed their depth, with the 1st Varsity eight taking home a silver medal, and the 2nd Varsity eight placing 5th overall, just 10 seconds behind the first LHS boat, and ahead of all the other 2nd varsity eight boats in the race.
For the first time in the history of the program, an LHS boat raced at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. The Boys 1st Varsity eight raced against 81 other crews from around the world, placing 69th overall. For many of the guys, the most exciting part of the race was listening to coxswains from the other boats shouting out commands in English accents and other languages.
The last race of the season, Massachusetts State Championships, was the most successful regatta of the fall for the Lowell Crew! The team placed 2nd overall out of 10 teams, the highest ranking ever for LHS at the Fall State Champs. We brought 69 athletes to the competition, and four of the eight LHS boats medaled! The girls’ 1st varsity eight made history when they won the State Championship title. The girls’ varsity four missed a bronze medal by just one second. The 1st and 2nd boys varsity eights again displayed their depth by winning the silver and bronze medals in the boys varsity eights race. In addition, the boys’ varsity four took home a bronze medal.
