LOWELL HIGH SCHOOL CREW – Spring 2006

Head Coach: Jennifer Campbell
Assistant Coaches: Robby Walters, Kendra Bauer, Mark McKenna, Jason Dussault
Athletes: 88

Highlights

This past spring was riddled with obstacles, such as the boathouse being closed, lack of coaching launches, no docks, and a flood so severe we had to end our season early. However, despite this, LHS Crew had some amazing accomplishments. We traveled to several states for competitions, each time proving that LHS Crew is becoming a strong force in high school rowing.

Coaches Campbell, Bauer and McKenna traveled with senior Amber Zapatka to Cincinnati, OH, where she raced in the USRowing Youth National Championships. Amber was one of only 16 girls in the country invited to compete at this regatta. Over three days, she raced four times, placing 3rd in her final, and 9th overall. This was the first time LHS had a boat invited to compete at the National Championships.

At the State Championships, held on Cape Cod due to the flooding in Lowell, the entire Varsity squad qualified for the Grand Finals. In addition, the girls 2nd Varsity Eight took home a bronze medal. There were also two fourth place finishes – the Boys’ Varsity Four and Boys’ 1st Novice Eight. Though not as strong a showing as the fall state championships, the team was happy to just have the opportunity to compete as the entire week prior to states they were flooded out of the boathouse and could not practice.

On May 12th, the team traveled to Princeton, NJ to compete in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Championships where it had its best performance in the history of the program at this particular regatta. The girls’ second varsity eight placed 2nd in their heat to advance to the grand finals. It was a phenomenal race, with the girls taking the silver medal in the grand final, beating the bronze medalists by over 10 seconds! This boat was the first LHS boat to ever with a medal at this regatta. There were 36 schools at the regatta, representing Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington DC.?? In addition to the Girls 2V, Amber Zapatka took 4th in her single in the final, qualifying for the National Championships. The boys’ varsity four also made it to the grand-finals, placing 3rd in their heat and 6th overall.

May 7th was the Lowell Invitational, and the team hosted 800 other athletes from the Northeast. LHS went on to win 2 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals at this event. It was an excellent day of racing, and showed that despite all the hardships faced by the team, it was going to be a good season.
