Highlights

This past spring was an incredible season for the crew team. It began with a strong showing at the Lowell Invitational with all six varsity eights winning medals! In addition, both the girls and boys lightweight fours won medals, making the LHS medals count 3 gold, 3 silvers and two bronze. This was an excellent accomplishment, especially given the size of the regatta. With 18 teams traveling from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, and 900 athletes competing, the Lowell Invitational has become one of the largest spring high school regattas in the Northeast.

Lowell hosted the Massachusetts State Championships, which brought together 20 teams and almost 1,000 athletes from across the state. LHS had a successful day and for the first time in the 10-year history of the LHS crew program the boys’ varsity boats won medals at the regatta. The boys’ second novice eight won their race and claimed the state champion title for their event. The girls’ varsity eight raced hard and captured a silver medal, finally edging out rival Brookline high school for the first time in the history of the LHS crew program. The boys varsity heavyweight eight, which was not seeded in the top three, had an incredible race, winning the bronze, also beating Brookline for the first time in the history of the LHS crew program. The boys’ varsity lightweight eight, racing as the 2nd varsity eight, captured a silver medal, losing only to the Wayland-Weston lightweight eight.

Building on that success, the team traveled to Worcester to compete in the USRowing Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. The event brings together the top public and private schools from the 13 states in the region. Lowell High School Crew joined 36 other teams for the two-day competition. The Boys Varsity Lightweight Eight had a spectacular race, capturing the silver medal (losing only to the Wayland-Weston boat which had beaten them at States) and earning an invitation to the USRowing Youth National Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio. For the second year in a row, LHS was represented at Nationals, which brought together private school and public school teams from 30 states. In fact, LHS represented one of less than 15 public school programs at the regatta, which brought together 140 teams. Of the 23 boys lightweight eights invited to the regatta, LHS placed 16th overall. It was a great two-days of racing, and showed that Lowell High School is among the best in the country.
